Neuroinclusion in Education

Neurodiversity, which refers to the natural variation in human brains, is a fact of life. Neurodiversity means that we are all different in the way we receive, transmit and process information. Conditions that come under the umbrella of Neurodiversity include Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Tourette’s, and many more. Individuals with these conditions are referred to as Neurodivergents and their brain makeup differs markedly from that of the majority who are known as Neurotypicals.

Around 20% of the global population is neurodivergent. This means that our education system – across the world – has a considerable portion of neurodivergent students already. These students are forced to be part of a system that is designed exclusively for neurotypicals. The end result of such a system is that neurodivergent minds often fall through the cracks because they simply do not receive enough support. The system fails them completely.

Modern education as it exists today does not cater to the needs of those who have different brains. Curriculums are rigid and there is no leeway for creativity or even original thinking. Rote learning and regurgitating are encouraged and students who master these skills are promoted and rewarded. It is no wonder that true learning and innovation suffer due to such education systems.

Our education systems currently create disability out of difference. But when Neurodiversity is embraced and understood, and neuroinclusion is implemented, these very systems can be instrumental in making learning possible for everyone regardless of differences in brains.

Neuroinclusion allows for the cultivation of every individual on their own terms. Approaches that focus on the correction of differences and efforts to push every individual student towards conforming to an acceptable norm have negative impacts on the well-being and mental health of students. In contrast, neuroinclusion supports engagement with education and maximizes learning potential.

One of the best ways to promote learning for every student in the classroom be they neurotypical or neurodivergent is by following the principles of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. UDL leads to better learning outcomes and increases student engagement and participation.

We, at NeuroGifted, understand Neurodiversity. We have the expertise to guide you toward achieving true neuroinclusion in educational institutions. Today, teachers have classes with a diverse range of learning preferences and abilities, including children with different cognitive abilities, hyperactivity, and emotional difficulties. Maintaining a balance between equity, delivering quality education to all, and catering to individual learning needs has made a teacher’s job extremely challenging. NeuroGifted provides teachers with much-needed supportive policies and frameworks to provide quality learning experiences to all students and build on their diverse strengths.

Awareness Building

We help schools achieve an understanding of what neurodiversity is all about, for neuroinclusion to be part of the very fabric of education and of the benefits that result from neuroinclusion.

We provide training on Learning Difficulties, Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia, etc. as well as Autism, ADHD, Working Memory, building IEPs, and related topics. We put strategies in place so that teachers can be equipped to cater to a Neurodiverse classroom.

Neuroinclusion starts with a single step. Before implementing widespread change, a pilot project is initiated which is beneficial in many ways. They also enable fine-tuning based on feedback and facilitate engagement. We help design pilot projects which make final implementation not only easier but also hassle-free.

Courses designed using the principles of Universal Design for Learning are by definition neuroinclusive because they support all types of learners. UDL is the best option when it comes to conveying information in multiple ways and is effective when it comes to engaging the interest of different learners.

Assessment tools, student profiling tools, and toolkits to enable classroom strategies for neuroinclusion are just some of the resources we bring on board to bring about sweeping changes toward neuroinclusion in schools.

Neuroinclusion projects are complex and require exhaustive planning and coordination. We stand with you through every part of the project implementation stage and continue to provide support even beyond that.
